Standard Life Investments have speculatively developed 8 new retail units totaling in excess of 3500m2 net floor area and associated infrastructure at their retail park in Perry Barr, Birmingham.
The retail units have been developed on service yards and at grade car parking and circulation roads. Our design philosophy recognized the poor ground conditions, dense network of underground services and drainage and a very busy trading passage.
We adopted a lightweight ‘metsec’ trussed roof spanning to perimeter columns to provide column free retail areas and reduce foundation loads. The additional benefit was also to reduce loads onto cantilever foundations and piles (to accommodate existing services).
Glazed canopy structures for entrance halls were designed as long span cantilevers with exposed architectural steelwork.
